Theme of the day of 6 October 2006 Europe Aid Project
The extensive report, which was prompted by the delayed European response to the disaster of tsunami in Asia in December 2004 concludes that a sophisticated administrative and technical response mechanism is necessary in order to help European as well as local victims of the seven major natural and man-made disasters outside EU territory. Much can be done by simply improving organisation of national resources. The Head of the French national delegation in the EPP-ED Group, Margie Sudre, who organised the public hearing, has welcomed the report, which includes various proposals for innovation in the field of aid. In particular, she supported the proposal which highlights the need for the EU to take care of its peripheral regions, which are a part of EU territory.
