Karl von WOGAU MEP
EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament
The Committe on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament approved a report on the implementation of the European Security Strategy by Karl von Wogau MEP on Thursday 5 October. The Chairman of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence of the Committee on Foreign Affairs stresses in his report that terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, regional conflicts, state failure and organised crime nowadays represent the main threats facing the European Union and its citizens. He adds that the increasing worldwide competition for sources of energy, as well as natural disasters and the security of the Union's external borders, must be taken into consideration in the further development of the European Security Strategy.

Mr von Wogau is sure that the EU is in the middle of a process of creating a Union of defence and security, in which swift and effective solutions to issues of the external security as well as various aspects of internal security and reactions to natural catastrophes will be covered.
