On 8 and 9 May 2005, the European People's Party is organising a two day-conference in Paris on "The EU Constitution - our common project for Europe".

On Sunday, 8 May, the conference will be opened by Wilfried Martens, President of the European People´s Party, EPP-ED Group President Hans-Gert Poettering MEP and Elmar Brok MEP, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament and former Chairman of the EPP Convention Group.

The first panel debate will then deal with the Constitution bringing Europe closer to the citizens and making the EU more transparent and democratic.

Speakers include among others Alain Lamassoure MEP, Jean-Luc Dehaene MEP, Vice-President of the European Convention, Iñigo Mendez de Vigo MEP and EPP-ED Group President Hans-Gert Poettering MEP.

On Monday the conference will focus on the progress to be achieved by the Constitution in terms of more solidarity and citizens´ rights. Speakers on this panel include Hubert Haenel, Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs in the French Senate and Aloisz Peterle MEP, Member of the Presidium of the European Convention and former Prime-Minister of Slovenia.

The closing speech will be held by Valery Giscard d´Estaing, President of the European Convention and former President of France.

The conference will be followed by a press conference at 12.00 hrs on Monday. All events take place at the Hôtel Intercontinental, 3, rue de Castiglione, F-75008 Paris.
